Government and Foreign Affairs Majors,

If you will be graduating next year and have a strong academic record, you should definitely consider the department’s Distinguished Majors Program.  The Politics DMP is a selective one-year program, the centerpiece of which is writing a thesis advised by the DMP director and a faculty advisor of a student’s own choosing. Thesis topics run the gamut of political inquiry and embrace a wide variety of research methods. If you are interested in the 2018-2019 DMP, spring break is a great time to begin thinking about a potential thesis topic and advisor.

Additional information about the DMP, including recent thesis topics, is at https://politics.virginia.edu/distinguished-majors-program.

Students who successfully complete the program receive special consideration for various final distinctions and honors. Many Politics faculty also favor DMP students in determining enrollment into upper-level Politics seminars.

To help you learn more about the program, there will be an information session on Monday, March 12th, at 5:00 p.m. in Room 342 Nau Hall. Food will be served. Although attending this meeting is not required for students interested in applying to the program, I hope to see many of you there. I am also happy to meet individually with students interested in chatting about the DMP one-on-one — please email me to find a mutually workable time.Applications to the 2018-2019 DMP, including recommendations from two faculty members, are due on Friday, April 6th.  Admissions decisions will be made very shortly thereafter. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me, Pete Furia, the DMP Director at [email protected].
