Prof. Lin Highlights Taiwan's Structural Problems in New Article
The Miller Center's Compton Visiting Professor Syaru Shirley Lin has a new article in China Leadership Monitor about four urgent structural challenges for Taiwan's government and allies. Dr. Lin argues that these challenges--namely, population decline, power generation, political polarization, and parochialism--pose a threat to Taiwan's longterm stability that is "equal if not greater" than the threat of Chinese aggression. The US can help Taiwan address these problems, Lin argues, "by increasing exchanges of students, faculty, and professionals, reaching a bilateral trade agreement, and assisting Taiwan to restructure its current manufacturing economy by creating new greener industries and higher value-added services."
